California’s Cradle-to-Career Data System (C2C) is a statewide longitudinal data system that links data from multiple governmental data sources that relate to educational and employment outcomes. The public-facing products being developed by C2C fall into 3 general categories:
Data dashboards - these will present data visualizations and aggregated data stories designed to communicate information on key topics to a broad audience.
Query builder - this is aimed at an audience somewhat more familiar with working with data and/or the policy areas and will allow users to request analyses of the data that go beyond what is available on the dashboard (but still based on aggregate data).
Data download tool - this is targeted at the most data-sophisticated users (e.g., academic researchers) and will allow some access to the raw, individual-level data.
The UC Berkeley Possibility Lab has partnered with C2C since early 2024 by providing advice and context relating to decisions C2C has made in developing the data tools. In late 2024, the Lab hosted two educator focus groups to better understand what data and strategies educators in California were most interested in from the C2C public-facing dashboards. C2C released the first iteration of their data dashboards highlighting pathways to college in California at the end of April 2025.
We also built out a narrative site to tell the stories of student journeys throughout the public school system. This interactive collection of six student stories, in conversation with The UC Berkeley Possibility Lab, offers a glimpse into the educational journeys of individuals navigating unique educational challenges and triumphs. Through text and audio narratives, these stories illuminate themes of resilience, systemic barriers, and personal growth, and aim to provide educators, policymakers, and school administrators with firsthand perspectives on students’ lived experiences.
