Los Angeles Times: Californians sharply divided along partisan lines about immigration raids, poll finds

We released findings from a new survey (fielded as part of the Institute of Governmental Studies IGS Poll) that suggests California’s registered voters are divided over current federal immigration efforts and whether these policies will negatively affect the state’s economy and culture. Although demographic factors like age and education level do shape attitudes within each party, these within-party gaps are modest compared with the large and consistent divides between Democrats and Republicans.The survey finds that:
- 51% of California voters oppose the current law enforcement effort to reduce the number of undocumented immigrants entering the U.S. illegally.
- 61% oppose federal efforts to deport all undocumented immigrants living in the U.S. today.
- 63% believe the current federal efforts to deport undocumented immigrants living in California will somewhat worsen or worsen California’s economy a great deal.
- 51% believe that the current federal efforts will somewhat worsen or worsen California’s culture a great deal.
